This Week in Anime

A practically impenetrable horror anthology, Boogiepop Phantom premiered nearly two decades before Boogiepop and Others despite being a sequel. The series brings together director Takashi Watanabe, probably known best for Slayers of all things, writer Sadayuki Murai (Millenium Actress, Perfect Blue), and character designer Shigeyuki Suga (Kino's Journey, Giant Robo) for a supernatural take on obsession, memories, death, and how we're all connected.

Nicky, I know the changing of the year can be scary for folks, but I bumped into this lady in the alley talking about manticores or some stuff like that and I dunno, it sounds like a good deal to me.

Maybe, it's a vacation? Maybe we can go somewhere nice? Wouldn't it be nice to sit on the beach and get lost in a good book? A story where nobody has to deal with anything dealing with real world problems, maybe even turn the clock back about 20 or so years?

A different place! How lovely that would be!

But before I go off into that white void, I gotta wrap this column up first I guess. So today, Nicky and I are covering the 2000 Studio Madhouse anime, Boogiepop Phantom. Based off of a series of light novels (and yet not an isekai, hint hint publishing industry), this is another old show that was quite formative to me as a young'n when I first saw it on Locomotion way back when. So much like the characters in this show, I delved into the shadows to see what I found. And what we found was--!

The Redo of Healer official Twitter account issued a content warning for the anime shortly before its television debut on Wednesday. The message is translated as follows: This program is fiction and bears no relation to any existing person, place, or organization. Surfers, Designers and Animals Frolick On The Beach in WAVE!! x Heaven's Design Team Collaboration Illustration

To commemorate the recent premieres of WAVE!! Surfing Yappe!! and Heaven's Design Team, Asahi Productions, who produced both anime series, have released a collaboration illustration of the two. The illustration depicts Masaki Hinaoka and Shou Akitsuki from WAVE!! Surfing Yappe!! playing with various animals on the beach alongside Shimoda and Kimura from Heaven's Design Team. In addition, the official Twitter accounts of both series are currently running a giveaway campaign until January 19, 11:59 pm JST. During the campaign period, those who follow any of the two accounts and retweet the corresponding tweets (embedded below) will receive a desktop wallpaper of the illustration as well as smartphone standby images of each character featured in the illustration. Gintama The Final Ends Demon Slayer

 Gintama: The Final, the new anime film of Hideaki Sorachi's Gintama manga, ranked #1 in its opening weekend — ending Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train's 12 consecutive weekends at the top of the Japanese box office. The film opened in Japan last Friday. The film is based on the finale of the original manga, combined with new story elements. The manga is also inspiring a new net anime special titled Gintama The Semi-Final with a story that will be a two-episode prequel to the film. The net anime will premiere exclusively in Japan on the online dTV service on January 15. The film will also have a novel by Mirei Miyamoto that will ship on January 8.
